Gardening in April and May
If you are itching like me, to get out and plant some vegetables in your garden, I have some suggestions. There are some plants that can handle the cool and sometimes frosty mornings here in northeast Ohio. See list below.
As far as annual flowers go, Pansies, Violas, and Primrose are safe bets. Summer annuals including other vegetables, (Tomatoes, Peppers, Squash, etc.) should not be planted until after the threat of frost has past. That date is not until Memorial Day!! I can’t tell you the number of people over the years that have planted early, then we get a frost, and they are replacing them the next day. Please don’t make this mistake! I know, that seems like a long time to wait, however, enjoy planting a wide variety of perennials, trees and shrubs to get your planting fix until the end of May.
